It might have been raining as the stars slowly made their way down the Red Carpet yesterday at the 87th Academy Awards, but the clouds that hung above the tents didn’t affect the atmosphere inside. From an entertaining musical number performed by host Neil Patrick Harris, Anna Kendrick and Jack Black, to Lady Gaga’s brilliant tribute to both Julie Andrews and The Sound of Music, to Patricia Arquette’s powerful acceptance speech about equal rights for women, the night was nothing less than memorable, despite some fairly predictable wins and mediocre jokes (the rather obvious and categorically lame Reese Witherspoon “Spoon” pun comes to mind here, which only Harris himself seemed to find funny). The Grand Budapest Hotel quickly accumulated the honors in the more artsy categories, while Birdman came out to be the champion of the evening taking home the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director (although, in the grand tally, both films tied in prizes).
