From the Oscars to ‘American Horror Story’: Lady Gaga Has A Box Full Of Surprises for Her ‘Little Monsters’
The 87th Academy Awards might be over, but one performance — or should we say performer — has given people something to chat about nearly a week later (us included). Lady Gaga, known for her highly-addictive pop anthems like “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face” (admit it, you’ve hummed a tune in the shower!), mesmerized both viewers at home and Oscars’ attendees on Sunday night when she walked onstage in a delicate white gown and matching silvery blonde hair for a musical tribute in honor of The Sound of Music’s 50th anniversary — those who had been expecting Mother Monster to exhibit her usual eccentricities and theatrical fashion statements were in for quite a surprise.
This time, there were no facial prosthetics, eggs or bubble dresses in sight; instead, she let her soprano voice dominate the stage. And dominate it did. Performing a medley of The Sound of Music’s most popular songs including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things” and “Edelweiss,” pop culture’s favorite phoenix caused jaws to drop to the floor and goose bumps to rise on one’s skin as she hit every single high note, shutting down the non-believers of her enormous talent (apart from Shonda Rhimes, who was just not impressed and would have preferred Frozen’s Idina Menzel to do the honors). Suffice it to say, her performance was spellbinding. And if attendee and fan reactions weren’t proof enough of her vocal capacity, a teary-eyed and always gracious Julie Andrews enveloped Lady Gaga in a hug, whispering in her ear that she was “amazing,” before taking her stand at the podium where she continued her compliments, eventually turning the conversation over to the film.
But Lady Gaga’s not done dishing out surprises. From revealing her engagement to actor Taylor Kinney three days after Valentine’s Day to today’s leak of her emotionally stirring new single “Till It Happens to You,” the singer took to Twitter this Wednesday to announce that she’s going to be in American Horror Story’s hotel-themed fifth season (currently, she is the first one to be confirmed amidst speculations of who will not be returning). How’s that for spooky?

This announcement isn’t coming out of the blue entirely though, seeing as Lady Gaga has dipped her toes in the acting pool before outside of the music video spectrum in films like Machete Kills, Muppets Most Wanted and Sin City: A Dame to Kill. Granted, these were only cameo appearances in comparison to what possibly awaits her in AHS, but we have a strong feeling that she’ll not disappoint in terms of her acting chops (or wardrobe choices!). In fact, she’ll probably feel right at home given the effort she puts into her play-like performances.
And if you’re going to cast Lady Gaga in a TV show, you might as well have her sing, right? While a whole season might be a bit of a stretch despite what Vanity Fair would have you believe, we definitely wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one episode where the stars break out in song a la Grey’s Anatomy, especially given that AHS’ creator, Ryan Murphy, is also the mastermind behind TV hit sensation Glee, and is known for his fascination and collaboration with music stars. Not to mention the fact that FX president John Landgraf recently promised “a radical reinvention” for the show. Of course, they might simply be referring to storyline and cast changes. Apart from his involvement in AHS and American Crime, Murphy also has a new 15-episode show in the works for FOX that is part comedy and part horror. Called Scream Queens, the anthology series, which is set to premiere fall 2015, will star Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas, among others, with the storyline revolving around a college campus rocked by a series of murders. Whether or not there is any truth to such gossip (and while we tend to stay away from such things, we find ourselves hoping there is — after all, who wouldn’t be curious to see the cast of AHS dancing and singing), Murphy will undoubtedly have his hands full this year.
With the large selection of shows to choose from lately, will you be making your reservations at Lady Gaga’s hotel of horror come fall?
